Rowdy's High School Friends in Review

ITEM!

A guy in my high school creative writing club, Bryan Mealer, just published a book.  It's called All Things Must Fight to Live.  Go, Buy, Read.  And be sure you take the time to watch the videos on his website. Bryan's running around on a book tour these days; he was in San Antonio last week.  After his reading I overheard one woman sitting next to me tell another that her daughter, K., went to high school with Bryan.  I turned to her and immediately recognized her:

"You're K.T.'s mom!"

"Yes!"

"I'm Rowdy, I was at your house quite a bit.  I'm the guy that took K. to the Bo Diddley concert."

"Oh, yes, I remember."

"Just want you to know that I still haven't forgiven you for setting K.'s curfew so early, we only caught the first 30 minutes of Bo's show before I had to return her home."

"Well, I was the evil mother."

"Grrr."

She was nice enough to forward me K.'s email though, so she's regained a couple of points.

Anyway, after Bryan finished his appearance we headed over to the Alamo Cafe and caught up.  We hadn't seen each other since 1993.

I learned tonight that I'm not the only person from my high school with a website dedicated to a defunct restaurant.  My friend, Eve, has a site recognizing the great cafeteria that once was Dubrow's.

Off_off

Earlier this week I got an email from my high school buddy, Crizzabster, in New York.  He's in a film called "Off Off Broadway" that you can watch for free online.  Don't want to spoil it, but it's funny.  It's a full-length feature, so set aside some time and get a comfortable chair.  Here's the link.  Let me know what you think.

Hey a new blog!

Just discovered a blog of an old buddy of mine, promises to be good.  Read it!

In other news,  just threw an all night party for a bunch of high school friends.  Still recovering.  I'll discuss it more later because now I have to prepare for the family vacation to Florida.  Going to take the Acolyte to see his great-grandma.  Flight leaves at 5:50 AM tomorrow morning though, much to do in the little time I have left.  Hope ya'll have a great holiday!

Wasting Time

I've spent countless late-night hours this week entering data into Facebook applications like "Cities I've Visited" and "Books I've Read."  Taking a rest today from finishing my "Wines in Storage" list.  No other real news though here...  The late nights finally caught up with me today, so I think it's about bedtime.

I do need to write a post about my Antiques Roadshow experience, so stay tuned.

ITEM!

I was checking my stats and came across this link to The Reliquary.  It makes me out to be a complete OCD case.  Anyone who knows me knows that's far from the truth.  Still, I think it's pretty funny.

ITEM!

I watched the movie Hilary and Jackie last night.  Not a bad flick.  It's based on a "true" story.  Some aspects of the film came off a bit sensational.  So once I finished it, I ran straight to the computer to read other aspects of the story.  Apparently the film did ruffle some feathers.

Tomorrow marks another parenting first:  We're taking the Acolyte to a birthday party.  His buddy, Bobcat, is turning 1.

Q&A

I occassionally check the key words folks have used to find this site.  Generally they're not that great, the most common include "R2-D2 Cake", "Hoopz" and "Juju Chang."

I remember last October my buddy McPan wrote a post and at the end of it she noted that someone found her with the search "Anderson Cooper Tanning Picture."  She called whoever did it "completely wrong and deviant." Not to be out-devianted, I thought I'd go on Technorati and see if I couldn't hit her site with something just a tad bit worse.  And I did, with "Anderson Cooper threw up in my mouth."  It got a response from her too.

Now, I can't say recent keyword searches to my site have been particularly bad.  But this new batch included some that were absurdly long and specific. I couldn't just ignore them.  So here they are:

  • did kenny die on the cosby show?
  • making japanese games compatible american ps2
  • song quote if you've got the money honey i've got the time
  • why did the Ramsey brothers create the buzzy bee
  • email contacts of all the hole evangelical churches in japan

Sorry I didn't have answers for these inquiries earlier, but I'll fix that right away...

  • No
  • Just buy a Japanese PS2, they're not that expenisive and you can watch Region 2 DVDs on it as well.
  • "If you run short of money I'll run short of time, you got no more money honey I've no more time"
  • To make children happy
  • You would think someone would compile all the emails for the churches in Japan, afterall, it is the Land of the Rising Son.  Unfortunately you'll need to find someone else for that little project. I'm too busy collecting all the addresses of all the Burger Chefs that ever existed.

Week in Review

ITEM!

I almost never buy CDs or DVDs at the mall.  But this weekend I found a copy of Dino De Laurentiis' 1976 version of King Kong on sale for $4.50.  I couldn't pass it up.

I remember as a kid collecting the trading cards.  I just found these pictures on EBay:

Kk1 Kk2

Kk3 I'm not sure whatever happened to mine.  Probably gone in one of the yard sales my folks seemed to throw every other year.  At any rate, it was good to see the film again.  First time in nearly 30 years.  I was amazed at how much I actually remembered.

Still haven't seen the new Peter Jackson version yet.  And honestly, I'm not in any great hurry to do so.  I heard it was wicked long.  Mrs. T is not a movie fan at all, so I don't watch as much as I like.  I've got a huge backlog of flicks I've yet to see (including everything nominated for best picture this year.)

ITEM!

It's been a bittersweet time in bloggerdom these past couple of weeks.  J-Go closed down Suburban Scrawl after three years and JtH is on an indefinite hiatus.  Admittedly, I haven't been able to post as much as I'd like, and I'm probably going to consolidate... no more Friday Cat Blogging and I'm probably going to close down my quiz.  (Kind of silly to host a quiz I think if you don't have time to play it yourself.)  But you can still get your quiz fix over at CBK's place.  I'm not going anywhere though, I just don't want to commit to serials if I can't maintain them.

It's not all bad news though.... the Hyperbolic Hermitage just popped onto the scene and will replace J-Go on my sidebar.  Oh, and for now on, anytime I have to mention J-Go, his name will be linked to this site.... I know it's cruel, but it's a just punishment... at least until he decides to resurrect his blog.

There is a new name among the Saints and Sinners.  Anyone who spends his days creating a more manly way to eat yogurt deserves a link from the Cloister...

Oil Change

Today I sat in the service station waiting room from 7:30am until 4:15pm.  I was grumpy and hungry by the end, but I wrote one hell of a long letter to my friend Scorpio.  Here are a few things I pondered during my wait:

Hotel Rwanda is not a funny movie.

If I had twins, I would name them Kodo and Podo after the ferrets in The Beastmaster, Mrs. T would have no say in the matter.

Goo Goo Clusters are difficult to find in Texas.

As much as I love gas station coffee, garage coffee is even better.

I prefer Popeye's chicken over Kentucky Fried or Church's.

I would make a very poor weatherman.

It wouldn't take much for me to pack up and move to Brazil.

I can't believe Adam Sandler sings on the Warren Zevon tribute album.

I'm glad I'm not a mechanic that has to deal with angry customers.

Hampton Inn is better than Holiday Inn because you earn points toward a free nights stay and airline miles.

Those little flag streamers that hang over car sales lots remind me of my Uncle Johnny's dentures.

In other news....Some Guy once again has changed his blog site.  Now you will find him here.
