10119 Jefferson Avenue
Dave Spriggs, Newport News HS class of '64, posted some great pictures on his high school's site. They include this photo of the Jefferson Ave. Burger Chef site taken in 2004. The site also has a Burger Chef ad from the school's yearbook. Check out the whole site for yourself here.

I grew up on Burger Chef in West Monroe, LA and Monroe, LA. I moved to Va in 2006 and I spotted this location the 1st time I drove by there. The food is terrible! At least the building is still there!

2319 Western Branch Boulevard
On the Route 17 bypass across from Churchland High School. This store celebrated its Grand Opening in the summer of 1967. They ran an Opening Special between Thursday, July 27 and Tuesday, August 1, 1967 for a free hamburger with any purchase and an advertising circular.

U.S. 1 and Azalea Avenue
For as far back as I can remember, there was a Burger Chef in Richmond, Virginia on the NE corner of US1 and Azalea Avenue (on the edge of the old Azalea Mall parking lot.) It eventually went away in the very late 70's or early 80's. My step-dad used to take my brother and me there as a treat when we were young.

Does anyone know if the photo on Agilitynut.com is the Jeff Davis Hwy location?

Yep, I can tell you it is on Jeff Davis as I'm the one who took the photo!

Jeff Davis is the WORST area in Richmond and there alot bad areas here. I can only imagine what it was like in 60s and 70s there and in Petersburg.

There was one and only one Burger Chef in my town, Roanoke, Va. It opened in the mid '60s at the entrance of a shopping mall that had radio towers coming up through it. Later a "Super Slide" was built behind the Burger Chef, owned by the franchisee. It was the traditional Kite design building, originally it had only the small walk in area in front to order from. Later it was enlarged with side areas for seating, and near the end a large addition was put on the front. In it's day, it was the best, but when Burger King and McDonald's arrived, it was all over.

I remember well the Burger Chef in Roanoke, Virginia. During the late 60s I was "going to school" and playing in a local band, "The Reasons Why". My bandmates and I frequented that Burger Chef far too frequently! I remember the "Burger Boats" and how I'd order one every time I visited - then I'd pay for it in more ways than one! But ..it still brings back happy memories, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a site memorializing the old place! So what ever happened to Mr. Moes?!

I was telling my 17 year old daughter about the wonders of Burger Chef and stumbled on this great site. My best memory of the Burger Chef in Roanoke was from Jr. High (James Madison). A friend of mine worked there part time and we were assigned a joint film project in drama class. We made an animated / live action film titled " GI Joe goes to Burger Chef". The film went something like: Joe leaves school in his sand colored Jeep (our drama teacher had a Firebird the same color so we filmed the driving sequence through the windshield of her car). When Joe arrived at Burger Chef, he "accidently" steps in ketchup getting some on the stainless steel counter (ahhh remember that folks?). The manager, in his fury about the mess, picks Joe up and tosses him over his shoulder where he lands on the burger conveyor. (Real manager, however the burners were turned off for this scene). My friend Henry is making burgers so when a "cooked" GI Joe comes down the conveyor, he slaps him on a bun and wraps him in paper. I, as the customer, get my burger and drink and go sit in one of the formica booths to eat. In the final scene, I take the last bite and pull Joe's olive green shirt out of my mouth :) Too bad the old Super 8 film got lost somewhere, I would love to see that again. What a great place that Burger Chef was !

I remember the Burger Chef in Roanoke from my childhood (I am now 52 years old and am an Air Force colonel stationed at the Pentagon.)
One of the previous posters is correct about a super slide being built behind the Burger Chef in Roanoke. I even have a photo somewhere that I made from the top of the slide when I was 12 or 13 years old. The BC was located next to Towers Shopping Center (which is still there). The site of the old BC is now an empty lot, however.

I just came across this page and it brought back memories. I noticed my younger brother has done a post so not to be out done here is another from before his time. The short lived super slide mentioned earlier was managed by a friend of mine before he went into service. We all must have entirely too much time on our hands but Google Burger Chef, bunch of additional stuff.

Not much TOO recognizable here, but it's the only photo I have of the old Burger Chef in Roanoke VA before it was torn down. In it's dying days, it had become the "Persian Palace".

Burger Chef also had a location on Brambleton Ave near the Coffee Pot.

Nah, the burger joint on Brambleton Ave. was a Kenney's. Similar architecture, but it was a locally owned chain.

I was the Manager at this Burger Chef in the mid 70's. It was right next door to a 7-11. It was a busy store, and I had a good crew there.
