Regional franchise director, Robert Holtzman, announced the opening of this drive-in location on April 28, 1960.  The store would be managed by Frank Callahan.  Holtzman also stated that another unit was opening on Landover Road in Cheverly, MD that same morning.  The two stores were the third and fourth stores to open in the greater Washington area. (2 More Burger Chefs, article by S. Oliver Goodman, The Washington Post, 28 Apr 1960, Page D7.)

Soft drinks were on the house opening day. (On the Town, article by Paul Herron, The Washington Post, 29 Apr 1960, Page C11.)

This site is now a Pizza Hut.

Robert Holtzman and William Platt opened this drive-in store in June, 1959.  It was the first store these franchise holders opened in the area.  Holtzman claimed that the store sold 2,000 hamburgers a day its first month in operation, beating his expectations. (Hamburger Chains Vie for Area Trade, article by Frank C. Porter, The Washington Post, 14 July 1959, Page B8.)

On February 1, 1960, the two front windows were discovered broken and $620 missing from the safe.  Police determined that it was an inside job and charged five men, including an 18 year old assistant manager and another employee of the restaurant, with grand larceny.  One of the suspects led police to the missing money, hidden in a canvas bag in a field off Telegraph Road south of Alexandria. (Five Are Held in Theft From Restaurant Safe, The Washington Post, 7 Feb 1960, Page A3.)

Dumfries, VA

I helped open the store in Dumfries, Va. in the early 70's. It was the highest volume store in the company at the time. It was originally a corporate store, and was sold to a licensee. Met a lot of good people there.

I worked a few months at the Potomac News in Triangle Plaza and used to eat at that Burger Chef on my lunch break. Those Big Chefs were pure heaven also the regular single burgers. It was so cozy in cold weather to walk in with the windows all steamed up. Why do such good things have to go away???? Also the Super Chef was awesome.

Franconia, VA

The Franconia store was on the opposite side of I-95 from the Springfield store. It was over by the Springfield Mall, and road construction over the last few years has caused it to be torn down. It was originally a franchised store, but was bought by the corporation. It was really low volume, and the company didn't keep it open long. Later, it was a garden center, but now it's gone.

Your website is wonderful. Burger Chef is still my favorite of all of the fast food I have ever eaten. There was Burger Chef on Memorial Av. in Lynchburg, Va next to a shopping center formerly Pittman Plaza, now just known as The Plaza. When the buy out came it became a Hardees. Now it is a check cashing/ payday loan storefront. I ate there constantly in middle & high school days.

The actual address is 2503 Memorial Ave.

Manassas, VA

Centreville Road

This store was originally opened by a franchisee and was bought by the corporation. I worked there in the early 70's as an Assistant Mgr. I was in that area a couple of years ago, and it's now a Chinese restaurant.  There were 2 Burger Chefs in Manassas. One was over in front of the mall, and the one I worked at was on Centerville Rd.

My first job was at the Burger Chef in Manassas, VA in 1978. I quit when the manager scheduled me on a Friday night and made me choose between my job and playing high school football.

Just so people know, that wasn't me who did that! From what Ken said, that was a couple of years after I worked there. I think I remember the Manager though, Ken. Was her name Irene? :)
