Mayfield, KY

From 1972-1974, I was night manager at Burger Chefs in Mayfield and Murray, KY. In September 1972, the Mayfield Burger Chef hired a 17 year old girl named Pam. We will celebrate 31 years of marriage next month. (By the way, she quit when I was named night manager - she said that there was no way she would ever work for me.)

This store was located just across from the Health Department.  The building is still there and has been used for other restaurants since.  The layout of the building is exactly the same as it was when it was a Burger Chef.

I remember going to the Burger Chef across from the health department when I was about 3 or 4, I got a stuffed animal, I think it was an animal from the old cartoon "Shirt Tales" I think the building has or is in the process of being auctioned off, I looked inside last time I was around that area....brought back memories.

"My dad used to take me over to the Burger Chef across from Hannan Plaza, where I'd get a Funmeal and take home my special little surprise, which on several occasions were those Monster Fun records with Fangburger."  John Lowry, from a radio broadcast that aired March 27, 2006 on WKYX/WNGO Paducah/Mayfield.

I saw where you had done the interview with John Lowry about the Burger Chef across from Hannan Plaza in Paducah.  That would be on Lone Oak Rd.  I don't remember a Burger Chef there (I was very young when they closed.)

This is just a comment on the Paducah location. I remember very distinctly the Burger Chef across from Hannan Plaza in Paducah. Originally, it had the diamond shaped sign with the man and the mustache. Later the signage was changed to reflect one of the more modern designs. That Burger Chef was in operation up through the Burger Chef and Jeff days and I believe was still in operation when I moved from the area in 1978. My parents used to take me there growing up and my mom's favorite thing was the Burger Bar. Today, the location has a Hardee's restaurant which is far less appealing both in building design and food quality.

According to Kyle at Burger Chef Memories, this was the first Burger Chef to open in the Louisville area.  Kyle's dad was was an area supervisor and a VP for the local franchise.  Needless to say, Kyle's website is packed with terrific background information.  Be sure to check it out.
