Anderson, IN

53rd Street

I worked there in 1977 for about 9 months. I was an assistant manager. The managers name was Mark, I don't recall his last name. The district manager was Ernie Maxwell. I did a week's training at the company headquarters in the Pyramids in Indianapolis. I started my career in Muncie at the Wheeling Ave. store.

Bloomington, IN

I remember a Burger Chef in Bloomington when I attended Indiana University in the late 70's. It was the first fast food restaurant in the area to introduce a salad/fixings bar. It was a unique concept at the time. It was so unique they did not consider all the ramification of food in the open. You can imagine my appetite vanished as I was waiting to "dress up" my burger when the person in front of me sneezed all over the food.

The Burger Chef in Bloomington was my first Burger Chef in which I managed.  This brings back a lot of memories.  Indiana University Cafe was closed on Sundays in which we got almost all of the students for meals they were lined up at the door.

Brazil, IN

National Avenue

Burger Chef was located on National Ave near the Brazil High School. The Burger Chef was converted into a Hardees, remodeled to look like a Hardees, the high school has since consolidated and moved out, but I remember the days of long lines of high school kids, I was one of them, school food yuck!!!

Brownsburg, IN

Main Street

I remember as a small kid in the 1970's, going to Burger Chef located on Main Street. Hardee's eventually took over the building, which was the modern brick drive-thru type, not the Open-Kite Cosmo-II design.

I remember the introduction of Fun Meals, before McDonald's had the Happy Meal.  They had orange and grape non-carbonated soda drinks pumping through plastic serving containers behind the counter.  The lid on the top of these containers pressed against a hose that was inside the drink reservoir area, that pumped the liquid up onto the clear plastic lid, causing it to flow down the four rectangular interior walls of the see-thru plastic. I also remember Burger Chef as being the first place to put bacon on a cheeseburger...three strips.  I remember the kid-oriented characters, usually monsters....the Star Wars craze in '77, Big Shef, Super Shef, Skipper's Treat (the fish sandwich), the Chicken Club, later, in the early '80's, the fixin's bar...

After about 1980, a McDonald's opened up with a K-Mart around the same time and area, on the other side of the then small town, and soon after, Hardees' orange and blue sign took over the modern Burger Chef sign, and eventually remodeled the inside of the building. I am not certain whether Hardee's is still there or not.

I found many websites today about Burger Chef, and it's been a trip down memory lane.  Thanks for allowing the input.

Hardees is not there anymore. They moved it off of 267 north of I74 and turned the old building into a FlapJacks (pancake house).

Columbus, IN

National Road

3rd Street

I'm from Columbus Indiana. As kids in the 70's my brother and I used to walk across town to the 3rd street location every chance we got. I have so many great memories of that place. I've searched everywhere and can't find any pictures of this Burger Chef. I'd give anything to see it again. Thanks for reading.

I started as the night manager of the Burger Chef in Crown Point, IN. A franchise store, John Barney had 6 or 7. He had them in Chesterton, Huntington, Columbia City, Fort Wayne, and North Manchester. He sold a couple to Hardee's, then turned them into Rax, then Miami Sub, and now Wendy's. First fast food restaurant to put bacon on a burger. Our store was the first to have a Jell-o Pudding Pop before the world ever heard of them.
